6412 Tank Locomotive
Locomotive No 6412, 64xx GWR 0-6-0 Tank Locomotive
Locomotive No 6412 is a Great Western Railway (GWR) 6400 Class 0-6-0 pannier tank introduced by Charles Collett in 1932. It is closely related to the 1930 GWR 5400 Class which is in turn an
evolution of both the Armstrong 1874 GWR 850 Class and Dean1891 GWR 2021 Class. The basic design was almost sixty years old when new with the 4' 7½" driving wheels which were a main distinguishing factor, in addition to the more modern profile. The smaller wheels permitted operation in more hilly locations than the 5400 Class and allocations were initially to the South Wales valleys.
During the 1970’s Locomotive 6412 was used in the filming of a children's drama series called the Flockton Flyer produced by Southern Television and shown in 1976 and 1977. Much of the filming was done on the West Somerset Railway, the resulting images being memorable for their high visual quality.
Locomotive No 6412 was withdrawn from traffic the beginning of October 2007 after re-entering service in May
1998; the locomotive is now in the process of its next 10-year overhaul. It is fully intended that all major works will be carried out in the workshops at Williton.
